ffrankwhite Posted September 10, 2007 Share Posted September 10, 2007 (edited) you cant really put your finger on what punk is anyway, its a lineage, the spirit of invention, people that....bring something new and fresh and original. its so difficult to explain, its something felt more than anything, its like....Jerry Lee Lewis, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker...its just that fucking renegade spirit, George Clinton had it, Captain Beefheart, Can, Kraftwerk, Little Richard, Chuck Berry. it has nothing exclusively to do with mowhawks and leather jackets and playing 3 chords very very fast. punk began like that because it was amateur, played by the kids and people latched onto that. but all the people that really ARE punk 1) dont care about what you call it 2) went on to make wildly original music after they got over that 3 chord hump. The Clash are right in there as being punk, Johnny Rotten and everything he's done including and since the pistols is punk. it spreads out of that though, its there in cinema with people like Jim Jarmusch and Lars Von Trier, David Lynch. its about original thinkers. you cant really put it into words. its an art thing, its poetry thing, its an ideology, you cant really like...assign a certain sound to punk because...its not about that."All it takes is for one guy or girl to stand up and say 'fuck this!' and everybody goes 'YES!
