Vincent Vega
OP,what do you mean with "stones pop period with Brian Jones"?that certainly wasnt a "pop period"..it was the blues..rock n roll..you seem to have singled out two poppy songs from that period.Check out the majority of Aftermath, Between the Buttons, Their Satanic Majesties Request, and singles released during that period. It's either Pop or Pop Rock.
Kill Devil Hill
I actually think Appetite was a really poppy album. I mean, yeah, it's rooted in hard rock, but the melodies had elements of pop and dance. In which songs do you find these elements? The only song I might agree has got an element of dance must be the rhythms in rocket queen.Mr. Brownstone, Paradise City, Think About You, and Anything Goes. Apollo
To answer the question, I don't really care as long as the music was good.Exactly.Why people get caught up in labeling music is beyond me.It either sounds good to the listener or it doesn't. Labels are just silly.
wasted
The sound seems to happen once the songs are written. You a find a producer who wants to do it a certain way. I could see Dj producing with Axl which might bring a more commercial sheen to things.

Redhead74
GN'R wasn't pop? What about "Don't Cry", "Sweet Child O'Mine", or "Yesterdays"?I tend to agree here. Add November Rain to that list as well. I think in general when you listen to most of their music it's hard rock, but they really have had quite a diversity of styles in there. It's what IMO makes them so unique. They were first and foremost a hard rock band but they weren't afraid to come out with some great light stuff that hit the charts well. It's that combination of a few good popular hits (SCOM, Don't Cry, NR) combined with the edgier and harder tracks like It's So Easy, My Michelle and Coma that made them 'cool' at the time. TiedHands
The term "pop" actually isn't a death knell, and truth be told, I like it when rock bands dabble with "poppy" material. That doesn't mean I want them to do something that sounds like Justin Timberlake, but the word is really dependent on the context. Some of the songs mentioned, "SCOM", "Don't Cry", "November Rain", "Yesterdays", those actually have a pretty big pop element to them, and all it basically means is it's more pleasing and accessible to more people, which isn't always a bad thing. I've seen 'Better' described as "pop metal" by several people, and it's kinda true. It's not a down and dirty rock song, it's got a fantastic, simple, effective riff and some amazing lyrics with great delivery and phrasing and it just SOUNDS good. To me, 'ITW', 'Catcher', 'SOD', and 'TWAT' all have pop elements, but in a way that enhances them and makes it a good thing...

I like Gn'R the way they were.well, it's your opinion and i respect that. have you ever listened to futuresex? what comes around, lovestoned and the interludes are insanely awesome. the production, the layers and the beats are miles ahead CD and it took a lot less time to create. I've never watched so many grown men cry.But it's true. I don't know which alternate universe bionic56 resides in, but in this one -- if your song ("Sweet Child") charts to #1 on the BillBoard 200 with a pretty video, and a strong, repetitious chorus -- you is pop, brudda. "Yesterdays" is extremely pop. How is it not? Because it has a guitar solo?
