[FALSE] Orianthi Panagaris joins GNR

Recommended Posts

She's what, 29 years old? She has all the time in the world to grow, play with other interesting musicians and continue excelling in her craft.

Her modern success began and ended with According to You, making her a filler in the long list of one hit wonders. It's why joining bands as a touring guitarist is her only option to stay in the current mainstream.

I would disagree; she's got a very impressive resume. As we all know, having a top selling single is only one way out of many of being successful. Buckethead's stuff doesn't chart, and I doubt anyone would say he's unsuccessful or a one hit wonder.

She's worked steadily, she's played with a lot of big names, and I wouldn't think that at this point it's her "only option" or last chance to do anything.

You'd be surprised :P

One-hit wonders don't go very far besides touring casinos and doing occasional guest spots

Ezcept that Orianthi has been touring arenas, playing the Grammys, winning awards and all...

I wonder how it'll go when Axl gets to "turn around bitch I have a use for you" during a gig. Hell, first rehearsal.

She bends over and Axl gets behind her, dryhumping her while he sings the line.

Serious answer - they could just drop the song.

Seriously though, I'd much prefer this to Nic Sterling or some other 20 year old YouTube prodigy like I originally thought they were going to go for. Not my opportune choice at all but it'd generate some buzz.

Or, you know, she could just be cool with it because she's a grown-up musician.

Every musician has to know what they are getting themselves into, joining this charade. On the plus side, you will see a lot of Brazil and make some easy money. On the negative side, you will be playing other guy's material while doing it. Forget about, this band releasing a new album. You will also be working for those imbeciles, Team Brazil, who will fuck you over with your solo tours.

as of right THIS moment, i don't believe she is in. if she was TRULY under Axl's payroll, i don't think she would be playing with Sorum and Slash this upcoming monday:

You'd think, but then again Slash guested on the Dead Daisies album, with Fortus.

She's not as skilled as Bumble, but if he left I'd be okay with her as a replacement. She's different, she'll bring her own "thing" to the band. However I'd much rather see Bumble stay and Ashba leave, or at least drop the Ashba swag and leave the solos to Bumble/Fortus.

That's the rub, isn't it?

Become Axl's employee and be ensured of a solid paycheck (when the tours actually happen).

The catch is that you'll be a cover musician. You won't get to play original material or anything you yourself wrote. You will be playing other musicians' material, always.

And so, you end up with bottom of the barrel garbage like DJ, Ron, and Fortrus, people who have zero creative talent of their own.

All these "She'd only be joining to cover other people's songs forever" comments got me thinking: How crushed do you think DJ is that he will likely never get writing/producing credits on a GNR release?

Remember how during the first few years of his tenure with the band he would always tout himself as a songwriter/producer and that he didn't join Guns just to fill in and cover other musician's songs? HA!

Even if the next album drops soonish, it's going to be the long-delayed subsequent Chinese Democracy album, which dude had nothing to do with, thankfully. If he's on it, it'll probably just be the equal to Ron's parts on Chinese.

DJ doesn't care. He isn't in this for "artistic integrity" or to be creative.

He knows he's there to cover Slash, and by doing so, he'll further his own interests, all of which are financial.

Oh, I don't know. You hit the nail on the head when you said his interests were financial. I think he pictured the next GNR album bascially being a DJ Ashba TM production, consisting mainly of DJ Ashba TM. songs. Completely taking for granted that Axl had a more or less finished album waiting in the wings that he had no intention of simply shelfing. I think if DJ knew this would have been 5 years of touring on and off, and maybe re-tooling some Chi Dem era tracks, he might have given joining the band a tad more thought.

I could see someone doing this for a few years to save some money and then bailing, to be honest...and I wouldn't blame them at all. Axl and TB have set up this situation; others are going to take advantage.

As for playing others' music, that's how most professional musicians roll...if you're in a symphony orchestra or play for a Broadway show or work as a touring guitarist, you play someone else's music. There's no shame in making a living.

Yeah, you gotta figure that to an up and coming guitarist, standing next to Axl fucking Rose on stage rocking out would seem pretty cool, covers or not. On the flip side to that, that gold will only glitter for so long...
