netcat
pagan holiday, symbolizes the transition from winter to spring. pancake is a symbol of the sun. Actually, I thought it is popular only in Eastern Europe
Lio
We have it too, but it's a catholic holiday (Feast of the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple) and it's on February 2nd, so we've already had the pancakes. No idea why we eat pancakes then, but anyway, we do.

Lio
It's a day to pig out before Lent. You're right, of course. We don't eat anything in particular then, just a lot. But then it's only two weeks ago that we've had pancakes.

tomfriend
I went to a Christian school. They told us it was to do with fasting for lent. Traditionally you use up the various shit in your pantry to make pancakes. Seems random as anything, but no more so than Easter eggs or pretending bringing a tree indoors for the winter has anything to do with Jesus.
